SPEEDING INTO SPRING
"I feel the need - the need for speed." - Lieutenant Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell,
Top Gun (1986)
As I ponder this spring editorial, it's a glorious, unseasonably warm 62 degree day in early February. The mild winter weather in New York City will allow an easy segue into spring - my very favorite season - a time when the Northeast once again blooms with nature's bounty. We're experiencing the ideal weather
cigar enthusiasts savor; not too chilly, not too warm. For this season of regrowth, our spring issue comes to you perfectly packaged for this time of rejuvenation. From exclusive men-only spas, to exploring high-end vodka and gin, this issue's content is sure to dazzle your senses.
If you're "feeling the need for speed," turn to our adventure feature on the flying leathernecks, page 52. These tried-and-true Marine pilots deliver the ultimate edge-of-your-seat excitement ... Go from 0 to 170 mph in 1.7 seconds with writer Jeff Bolton as he sits shotgun with a no-nonsense Marine fighter pilot who makes Tom Cruise's character in Top Gun seem like an amateur flyboy.
Like the steadfast Marines, the cigar makers in Honduras are just as determined to come out on top. A country too long in the shadows of other cigar-producing nations, Honduras is finally coming of age with new, exciting brands entering the marketplace. Get the full story on page 70. If you're not familiar with the premium smokes originating from Honduras, I urge you to experience this largely untapped resource of quality cigars.
For our readers who have a love of the briar, in this issue we highlight the famed pipe master Alfred Dunhill. Travel with us behind the coveted "white spot" as we explore the past, present, and future of this international phenomenon. Meet the man behind the creation of these exquisite one-of-a-kind pipes on page 64.
Our new SMOKE How-To Tip debuts in this issue, located in our SMOKE Front section, beginning on page 28. In this inaugural piece, we educate you on how to purchase a car at auction. Travel to Scottsdale, Arizona with auto guru Winston Goodfellow as he chats with the auction experts on the do's and don'ts of purchasing your dream car. For my part, the only advice I have is this: Make sure to get a convertible, put the top down, light up your favorite cigar, and ... just drive.
